Unfortunately, my Doctor appointment didn’t go as well as I had hoped. After my endoscopy, my Doctor told me I needed everything redone, and said “don’t worry about the cost”, which I took to mean it wouldn’t cost. However, when I got clarification at my appointment yesterday he said it would cost me something, but he didn’t know exactly how much, and that they’d get back to me.
I also didn’t get any answers as to why this happened, or what is the source of my original pain. All I know is that the top two stitches “pulled through”, and the rest are stretched, but holding still. He kept saying eating really large quantities of food would cause this, but I didn’t do that. I was meticulous with my portions and eating habits (to an annoying degree). My husband can testify to this. I know there are people who lie about their eating habits, so it’s frustrating when doctors just assume I must be, as well, instead of looking for what else it could be. For a little bit I started to wonder if I have an eating disorder where I raid the fridge at night in my sleep (I dismissed this because I would notice if food was then suddenly gone).
For arguments sake, lets just assume I overate. If I had been repeatedly overeating to the point of my stitches failing in 2 months, then why have I met the criteria for a “successful” ESG? I have lost over 10% of my body weight in two months, all without being able to exercise and having PCOS (which makes it very difficult to lose weight)? Why would I be measuring and logging every morsel that goes in my mouth for 75 days straight if I was just going to binge and ruin my stitches? There’s nothing in it for me to do that. Plus, I definitely wouldn’t have spent thousands on this, just to ruin it with overeating. Also, I looked up what happens when you overeat after any weight loss surgery, and there are symptoms I would have noticed like nausea and vomiting. So the data itself backs me up that I’m not binging and lying about it.
So… what now? I still don’t know. I have spoken with a different doctor who is more familiar with ESG. He assured me that overeating isn’t the only reason this can happen, and helped me determine another test I can have without going under anesthesia (again) to see if there’s something going on in there that my ESG doctor may not be mentioning (or missing). I submitted a request for this test to my primary doctor today. I’m just afraid something is wrong in there, and that’s what’s been causing the pain all along. I know it isn’t my gallbladder since that is gone, and he verified there are no stones lodged or bile leaks left from the surgery. If the Sucralfate (ulcer medication that coats your stomach) is making my pain better, then it must have something to do with my stomach/digestive system. Right? This seems the most logical to me, but I am not a Doctor. At this point I’m considering stopping the Sucralfate to determine if it’s masking a problem in there, or if whatever was causing the pain is now healed. Stay tuned…
